The Seventh Magpie – A Dark Fairytale by Nancy Chase

It should probably come as no surprise that I love fairytales.

A bit of a giveaway, I know.
A bit of a giveaway, I know.

It’s the mystery and wonder of them. And the darkness. You can’t escape the darkness. There’s something that sucks you in about the terrors that heroes and heroines of fairytales have to face. The evil, conniving step-parents. The witches in the woods. Their own fathers. Red hot shoes and being crippled by blindness or losing your hands. Even where there’s a happily ever after, that ending is usually dearly paid for.

So of course, when I found out that another small indie author was writing a dark fairytale, I went out and bought it and was humbled to be included in her launch party from Feb 15-21 2015, which you can all totally come to for the chance to win free, awesome books and art!

I will admit I haven’t read her work yet, but isn’t the cover itself beautiful?

And this is a peek at the inside (!!!).

As if I needed any more convincing to go buy this, the author released a heartwrenching piece entitled This Is How My Heart Was Broken: The Real Life Fairytale Behind the Seventh Magpie. Here’s an excerpt.

Once upon a time, more than thirty years ago, there was a fifteen-year-old girl who was very shy.  She read a lot of books, walked alone in the woods a lot, and spent most of her time in the world of her imagination.

Like most girls that age, she felt lonely and misunderstood.  She had already developed a passion for writing.  So, that summer, to fill her loneliness, she decided to use her writing skills to make up the perfect man, the one who would be her happily ever after.

You can go feel the rest of the dark, lovely magic here.

In the mean time, I’m looking forward to a quiet, rainy afternoon where I can brew a cup of strong tea (or pour myself a shot of single malt whiskey, depending on my mood) and settle down with this book.

What are your thoughts?
